As Spring approaches, we wait in patient expectation for the flowers we planted in the Fall to push through and signal the warmer weather. Perhaps the flowers aren’t the only thing you are expecting. Maybe you are patiently awaiting the arrival of a precious little one as you grow your family. Maybe you have a friend or family member in the midst of pregnancy. Did you know that chiropractic care is there to support you and your baby right along with your visits to see your Ob/gyn? Safe and gentle chiropractic care can help you through the ups and downs during pregnancy.
While working with pregnant patients, I have found each phase of pregnancy to have its own set of challenges. It’s different for every patient. My goal is to alleviate any pain or discomfort you may have so you can experience all the positives that pregnancy has to offer.
Chiropractic care has a place in each trimester of pregnancy and can help ease the symptoms that appear each month as your baby grows.
1st Trimester: You may have morning sickness, breast tenderness, fatigue and emotional mood swings. Your hormone levels are changing rapidly which is necessary for a healthy pregnancy. Your baby is beginning to develop and by the end of the three months, your baby is fully formed right down to his or her fingers and toes.
2nd Trimester: Your baby is going through a growth spurt. You may begin to notice increased back pain, breast enlargement, mid-back pain or even sciatica–pain down one or both of your legs.
3rd Trimester: Your body will go through the greatest physical changes of pregnancy. Your center of gravity changes EVERY day. What does that mean for your back? For some pregnant women it means back pain or sciatica. Others may experience groin pain or pubic symphysis pain. Your baby is also working on positioning for labor and delivery by dropping head first down into your pelvis.

Even in the days and weeks after you give birth, chiropractic care can help. Labor and delivery can be hard on your body. A chiropractic adjustment to realign your pelvis will reduce pain and tension in your low back and hips that you may not even realize is there. Breastfeeding and even just holding your new bundle of joy can also cause pain and tension in your mid-back and neck. Don’t forget–chiropractic care is also safe and gentle for kids, newborn through adolescence and into adulthood.
